2019 SYRAH
Serine Sauvage
GABILAN MOUNTAINS
$45
Coastview Vineyard, situated on a ridgetop 2,300 feet up the Gabilan Mountains, is the predominant (90%) component of this wine. One of the most dramatically beautiful sites on the Central Coast, Coastview is a success story written by cool-climate syrah. Thin soils of decomposed granite with veins of limestone are planted to chardonnay, pinot noir, grenache, and of course syrah.
Granite has proven itself as one of the greatest soils for syrah, from the slopes of southern Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, to Saint-Joseph and Cornas. The name Serine Sauvage is an homage to these great terroirs in the Northern Rhône, where the old-school, massale selection is named Sérine, often considered the best vinifera material for creating concentrated and long-aging wines. These examples also tend toward a certain sauvage character– wild and rustic, while still quite ethereal.
Dark purple and and medium-full bodied. Brambleberry, anise, and smoked meat dominate the nose, while white pepper and black fruits follow on the palate.
